“Check in with yourself, set boundaries, and take time to recharge when needed. You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
Meet Philemon Kiprotich, WHS Committee Member
1. When did you first join HelpAlong?
I joined Help-Along in 2024 march because I wanted to gain experience working in a supportive, community-focused environment. It was important to me to develop skills in communication and empathy, and I saw Help-Along as a great opportunity to grow personally and professionally while contributing to a good cause.
2. What motivated you to join HelpAlong, or how did you hear about HelpAlong?
I was looking for a way to build my communication and support skills in a meaningful setting, and HelpAlong stood out. The training and mission aligned perfectly with my goals, and I knew it would be a valuable and fulfilling experience.
I had heard about HelpAlong through a friend who had been working with the organization. They spoke so highly of the meaningful impact it had, not just on the people they supported, but on themselves as well. That inspired me to get involved.
3. When did you become House Senior and what made you make the move?
I became House Senior in September 2024 after being encouraged by the C.O, who saw leadership potential in me. I was already very involved and committed, so when the opportunity came up, it felt like the right next step.”
“Make sure to check in with yourself, set boundaries, and take time to recharge when needed. You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
4. What do you enjoy most about working with HelpAlong?
I enjoy how much I’ve learned from this role—about others and about myself. Every shift brings a new perspective, and I’ve grown in empathy, patience, and resilience thanks to the work we do.
I really value the sense of community at HelpAlong. Whether it’s with the team or the people we support, there’s a shared sense of purpose and compassion that makes the environment feel genuinely supportive and uplifting.
5. Can you share a memorable achievement or project you’ve worked on at HelpAlong?
One of my most memorable achievements was supporting a young person through a particularly difficult transition. Over time, we built trust, and I was able to help them access the right resources and feel more confident in taking steps forward. Seeing their progress—and knowing I played a small part in it—was incredibly rewarding.
A standout experience for me was helping new employees. It felt great to be able to share what I had learned and help others feel more confident in their roles. Watching them grow into compassionate and capable team members was a proud moment.
6. What advice would you give to new employees joining HelpAlong?
Approach every interaction with empathy and without judgment. Even if someone’s situation is unfamiliar to you, your willingness to listen with compassion will always be felt and appreciated.
This work can be incredibly meaningful but also emotionally heavy at times. Make sure to check in with yourself, set boundaries, and take time to recharge when needed. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
7. What motivated you to volunteer for the workplace health and safety committee?
I volunteered because I care deeply about creating a safe, supportive environment for everyone. I believe that when people feel safe—physically and emotionally—they can do their best work and feel more connected to the team.
8. What aspect or why is workplace health and safety is most important to you?
What matters most to me is the idea of prevention. A safe workplace isn’t just about reacting to incidents—it’s about creating systems and habits that prevent harm from happening in the first place. That proactive mindset is key to keeping everyone safe.
The most important aspect of workplace health and safety to me is psychological safety. When people feel respected, heard, and supported, they’re not only more effective in their roles—they’re also healthier overall. Mental well-being should be treated with the same care as physical safety.
9. Do you have any specific workplace health and safety goals you’d like to achieve?
A goal I have is to improve how we communicate safety information—making sure it’s clear, accessible, and regularly updated. When people understand what to do and why it matters, they’re more likely to follow through and feel empowered to act.
One of my goals is to help make health and safety training more engaging and relevant—especially for new team members. Practical, scenario-based training can help people better understand how to respond in real situations.
10. What are your goals or aspirations for the coming year – personally and professionally?
I’d like to continue developing my leadership skills, particularly in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for both colleagues and clients. I’m also hoping to take on more responsibility in team coordination or training.
Personally, I want to focus on better work-life balance—prioritizing self-care and setting healthy boundaries so I can stay grounded and energized for the work I do.
This year, I’d like to prepare myself to take on more leadership or mentoring responsibilities within HelpAlong or similar organizations. I’m excited by the idea of supporting newer team members and contributing to positive team culture.
On a personal level, I’m focusing on improving my time management so I can balance my commitments while also making space for personal growth and hobbies.
11. Outside of work, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy?
I’m into fitness activities like gym and running. They keep me energized and help me maintain a good balance between physical and mental health.
I like spending time with friends and family, and I also enjoy volunteering in my community. Being around people and giving back brings me a lot of joy.
12. Is there something about you that might surprise your colleagues?
People might be surprised to learn that I’m a pretty big introvert—I enjoy deep conversations and quiet moments, even though I’m outgoing in the workplace.
People are often surprised to learn that I , cook really well. It’s something I enjoy outside of work and it’s a fun way to unwind. And I am training to be a Coxswain.
